This Gruul deck is built around colorless Eldrazi lands (Eldrazi Temple, Ugin's Labyrinth), Urza's Saga, and artifact-adjacent value like Blade of the Bloodchief and Vexing Bauble-style hate pieces from their own board. Meltdown for X=1 can blow up Blade of the Bloodchief (Urza's Saga itself is an enchantment land and cannot be destroyed by Meltdown, though the Construct tokens it creates are great Meltdown targets), disrupting their value engine. Tormod's Crypt and Surgical Extraction are lower-impact since this isn't a graveyard-combo deck, but Surgical Extraction can still strip a troublesome Urza's Saga or key artifact from their deck entirely after a copy enters the graveyard. Violent Urge is cut because their creatures (Basking Broodscale, Glaring Fleshraker, Devourer of Destiny) are bigger bodies where a +1/+0 first strike trick rarely closes combat math in our favor.

This is the defining mirror-image matchup: both decks race with cheap threats and burn, so efficient removal that answers their Dragon's Rage Channeler and Monastery Swiftspear matters more than our own marginal pump spells. Unholy Heat kills any of their two-toughness threats for one mana and scales to 6 damage once we hit delirium, making it far better than Lava Dart's 1 damage. Surgical Extraction can strip a key Cori-Steel Cutter or Expressive Iteration copy after it hits their graveyard, disrupting their draws going forward. Violent Urge is the weakest combat trick here since both boards are full of small creatures that trade regardless, so it comes out for better removal.

While Consign to Memory can target triggered abilities like Solitude or blink triggers, it doesn't stop their creatures directly, and Spell Pierce is weak against their creature-dense deck, so both stay in the board. Unholy Heat is a big upgrade over Lava Dart against their 2-toughness creatures like Witch Enchanter and Phelia, and it can scale to 6 damage against bigger threats like Overlord of the Balemurk once we hit delirium. Tormod's Crypt can proactively strip their graveyard to blank Emperor of Bones' recursion and slow their card advantage engines. While Lava Dart hits 1-toughness targets like Orcish Bowmasters and Flickerwisp, it falls short against their 2-toughness creatures, making it the clear cut.
