Hammer Time

Boros Energy is a fast, aggressive deck that pressures you with Ragavan, Ocelot Pride, and Guide of Souls while threatening to go wide before you can assemble the Hammer combo. Portable Hole answers their early threats like Ragavan and Ocelot Pride efficiently, while Stern Scolding handles Guide of Souls and similar creatures. Post-board, watch for Wear/Tear and Wrath of the Skies — prioritize getting a Hammer on an evasive threat like Ornithopter or Inkmoth Nexus rather than a ground creature, as Goblin Bombardment can sacrifice blockers to remove your equipped creature. Cryptic Coat and Atomic Microsizer come out as they are slow or redundant compared to your core threats, and Pithing Needle has minimal targets in their list.

Jeskai Blink is your most challenging matchup in the format — Solitude and Galvanic Discharge answer your equipped creatures for free or at minimal cost, and Ephemerate/Phelia loops let them rebuy those interaction pieces repeatedly. Forge Anew is critical here: it lets you reattach Colossus Hammer at instant speed during combat, punishing their Solitude and Ephemerate sequences, and its draw ability provides card advantage in a grindy game. Consign to Memory handles their wraths (Wrath of the Skies) and any problematic permanents, and gives you countermagic parity since they're likely boarding in Mystical Dispute and Strix Serenade. Stern Scolding catches Phelia and Ragavan cleanly on the play. Cut the clunky non-contributors — Memnite is a liability against a deck full of two-for-one removal, and Cryptic Coat and Atomic Microsizer don't pull enough weight in a game that goes long; keep your counter suite (Metallic Rebuke) intact since you need interaction in a permission war.

Affinity plays a similar artifact-based shell but wins through wide boards with Kappa Cannoneer and Pinnacle Emissary rather than a single Hammer hit. Their most dangerous post-board cards are Whipflare — which kills both Puresteel Paladin and Stoneforge Mystic — and Engineered Explosives, which can wipe your entire board at zero. Consign to Memory is your most important tool here: hold it up to counter Whipflare, EE activations, or a Kappa Cannoneer that would otherwise race you. Forge Anew provides resilience by letting you recur and re-equip at instant speed after a sweeper, while Portable Hole cleanly removes Pinnacle Emissary, Arcbound Ravager, and Memnite before they feed a Ravager or build a Saga token army. Play the role of aggressor — your fastest draw (Ornithopter or Inkmoth Nexus under Colossus Hammer) is faster than anything they can assemble, so prioritize speed over interaction except when they're threatening a sweeper.
