Death and Taxes runs Wasteland and Karakas to attack our mana and bounce our legendary threats like Atraxa, Grand Unifier, while Aether Vial lets them deploy disruptive creatures like Solitude and Skyclave Apparition cheaply without casting them. Grafdigger's Cage shuts off graveyard-to-battlefield reanimation tricks and stops creatures from entering off the top of a library, providing incidental disruption against their value engines, though it does nothing to stop Recruiter of the Guard's search since that puts the card into hand rather than onto the battlefield. Echoing Truth answers a problematic Skyclave Apparition or Stoneforge Mystic that resolved off Aether Vial, and can even bounce their own token generators. Spell Pierce is weak since they can play around it easily with their disciplined curve, and Lotus Petal is a low-impact mana source we can afford to trim for more targeted disruption, so both are cut.
