Gruul Ponza plays big, resilient creatures (Annoyed Altisaur, Bramble Wurm via Writhing Chrysalis chains) and land destruction (Mwonvuli Acid-Moss, Thermokarst) to grind out a slower game, so we want to lean into our own bigger threats and grinding value. Avenging Hunter provides a large 5/4 trampler that also grants us the initiative, helping us keep pace in a long game. Masked Vandal can pick off an early Wild Growth or Utopia Sprawl to slow their mana acceleration. Lotus Petal is a low-impact one-shot that doesn't help our longer-game plan against this grindy opponent, so it comes out.
