Death and Taxes floods the board with small creatures like Stoneforge Mystic, Thalia, and Recruiter of the Guard, so Massacre is free removal that wipes their 1-2 toughness creatures when you're on Swamp against their Plains. Toxic Deluge offers a scalable sweeper for their bigger threats like Solitude, while Barrowgoyf is a resilient deathtouch/lifelink blocker that trades well in combat, though Swords to Plowshares still answers it cleanly. Snuff Out costs too much life against an aggressive white deck, and Brazen Borrower can only block creatures with flying and its Petty Theft side is taxed by Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, so it does little against their ground board. Trimming two Ponder for proactive answers is correct since Thalia makes our noncreature cantrips cost more and their board development is the bigger problem.
